The future of driving is here: General Motors’ Super Cruise. This semi-autonomous driving technology increases safety and convenience, and will now be available on the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali. The hands-free Super Cruise driving technology has been featured on just a few other select vehicles from the GM lineup and will also find its way onto the GMC Hummer EV at the end of this year.
So what does Super Cruise do? Using GPS, cameras, sensors, and LiDAR map data, this technology monitors everything a human driver typically would behind the wheel. Working in tandem with driver-assist safety technologies like adaptive cruise control, Super Cruise can brake, accelerate, and steer as needed on more than 200,000 miles of highways in North America. This is just GM’s next step toward fully autonomous vehicles.
Super Cruise is not yet, however, a substitute for human drivers. The 2022 GMC Sierra Denali and other vehicles with the tech constantly monitor driver activity to ensure the person behind the wheel is paying attention. If they aren’t, they will be forced to put their hands back on the wheel and resume full control of the vehicle.
